What is Phlebotomy

Phlebotomy is the act of drawing or removing blood from the circulatory system through an incision or puncture in order to obtain a sample for analysis and diagnosis. It is a job that requires a high level of skill. A trained and certified phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team. Phlebotomists are employed throughout the health care system in hospitals, neighborhood health centers, medical group practices, HMOs, public health facilities, and veterans hospitals. The field phlebotomy has greatly expanded in recent years and continues to grow. The phlebotomist has a direct affect on the overall quality of medical care, and good jobs are available in the field. Our Program trains students to meet the challenges of this rewarding career.

Course Content

Our phlebotomy training is structured to teach the techniques, skills, and equipment required for safe and effective collection. The student learns how to properly draw blood causing the least amount of pain to the patient. Phlebotomy training also covers the handling and controlling of biohazardous materials such as blood samples used/unused needles. Students of phlebotomy must also learn proper bedside manner, as a phlebotomist must show an exact mixture of skill and empathy. Specific topics of instruction include:

The basic functions of a phlebotomist

The basics of anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on the circulatory system

Safety and infection control: documentation/transportation procedures

Methods for effective communication

Professional ethics, legal, and regulatory issues related to blood and specimen collection

Blood collection equipment and supplies

Clinical and technical complications that may occur during a procedure

Special procedures for pediatric, arterial, and IV collections, elderly, homebound, and long term care patients

Body fluid specimens that are analyzed and procedures for transporting these specimens

Testing for drug use, forensic toxicology, workplace testing, and sports medicine

Certification Testing

The certification examination is administered at our facility on the last day of class, and all enrolled students take the test. Results of the exam are available before the students leave.
