Hospice and Palliative Care, There is a Difference.

Saad Healthcare is well known in the gulf coast region, providing home health, hospice and palliative care services for over 50 years. However, many people do not have a clear understanding of the difference between those service offerings, so we’d like to take a few minutes to explain them more fully.

Hospice care is a type of care and philosophy that focuses on the palliation of a chronically, terminally or seriously ill patient’s pain and symptoms, while also attending to their emotional and spiritual needs. In Western society, the concept of hospice has been evolving since the 11th century. Then, and for centuries thereafter in Roman Catholic tradition, hospices were places of hospitality for the sick, wounded, or dying.

The modern concept of hospice includes palliative care for the incurably ill given at institutions like the Saad Healthcare Inpatient Facility, but also care provided to those who would rather spend their last months and days of their lives in their own homes.

Hospice services through Saad Healthcare are available to those terminally ill patients who have decided to focus on their quality of life, over curative treatments. The patient and their family receive care and important support from a staff of end-of-life professionals whose sole focus is to provide comfort by managing physical symptoms and pain, as well as addressing any emotional and spiritual needs. Our care is provided for short or long term need, symptom management, active dying care and respite care.

Palliative care is a form of medical treatment, also offered at Saad Healthcare that manages the pain, symptoms and side-effects of chronic illnesses. It is important to understand the difference between Palliative and Hospice care. Palliative services are very different from hospice care in that you can receive care and support while still actively pursuing a cure for the underlying cause of your suffering.

Palliative care from Saad is available at any stage of a serious illness and can be combined with aggressive curative treatments. The great benefit of palliative care is that our palliative experts and nursing staff can work with you to manage your pain, symptoms and side-effects while your doctors focus on your treatment.

We hope this gives you a clearer understanding of the type of services available here at Saad and also a clearer understanding of the differences between hospice and palliative care, to find out more about Saad Healthcare, contact one of our Home Health and Hospice care specialists.
